Sir Edward Stubbs has a caustic tongue and
on occasions an unruly pen, but the petition of the unofficials for a second term for him is very strong evidence that he has overcome the youthful
asperities of manner which we here remember.
The Unofficials "cite his sympathetic considera-
tion of the views submitted to him by every race
and every class". I submit that we must revise
our ideas of his tactfulness in dealing with the
people of a Colony.
I understand that the Secretary of State

is not disposed to favour a promise of extension
